EMD Cinema. Election special!

April 7th, 2010
EMD CINEMA: NO DECISION BEFORE ELECTION
CINEMA MEETING WITH ELECTION CANDIDATES: Sunday 25 April at 5pm
A decision on the future of Walthamstow’s historic EMD Cinema has been delayed until after the general election.
The application by building owners the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG) will not be assessed by the council’s Planning Committee until at least June as councillors concentrate on the election campaign.
UCKG submitted their planning application to convert the EMD for religious use last August and a decision was originally expected in November. However, emergency repairs to the cinema late last year meant that council officers were unable to carry out an internal inspection of the site and the planning process fell behind schedule.
In a statement last week council leader Chris Robbins said, “Due to the high level of interest in the EMD Cinema we have received an exceptional amount of representations in respect of UCKG’s proposals, all of which need to be reviewed and where appropriate acted upon before a planning decision can be made”.
Mr. Robbins has now commissioned an independent report to assess the viability of reviving the EMD as a cinema. A team of consultants is expected to be appointed next week.
With a decision on the future of Walthamstow’s EMD Cinema now postponed until after the elections, the McGuffin Film Society has organised a public meeting where the issue can be discussed by local residents and the candidates seeking political office in the area.
We have invited all the area’s parliamentary and council candidates to attend this event and make their views known about the fate of the historic EMD.
We are urging all cinema supporters to join us at this important meeting so you can hear first hand what local politicians will do to help save the cinema if elected. There will also be the opportunity to ask questions and share ideas about the future of this much loved local landmark and unique cultural asset.
The EMD meeting and hustings will take place on Sunday 25 April from 5pm at Walthamstow School for Girls, Church Hill, Walthamstow. All welcome.
Please make every effort to attend the public meeting and help demonstrate how important this issue is to the local community.
Please circulate the link below to friends, neighbours and family who may also wish to attend this meeting.
